Wednesday 27 January 2010

I can't believe it's Wednesday again.

I've had a cold/cough thing for the past 2 days. I woke up at 9.7 this morning which, given my past few waking levels, says to me that I might see a run of highs. Alas. Time to up the basal (and revise my DAFNE handbook...) Because I've felt unwell, all I ate yesterday was some yoghurt, pizza and cookies. Which is not representative of my usual diet! All I had for breakfast was yoghurt, lunch was pizza and salad and I skipped dinner. Not good...I woke up at about midnight absolutely ravenous, so I ate cookies. Oops. Maybe that's why the 9.7 is there? I'm pretty sure I bolused okay for them.

Tomorrow I have an appointment with the lovely Lisa of Selly Oak Hospital's Diabetes clinic. I say lovely...I have a love/hate relationship with the woman. I love her because she is helpful. I hate her because she tells me what to do (and the five year old inside me wants to throw a tantrum every time she starts a sentence with "what I want you to do is..."). Still. It'll be okay. Plus it's an excuse to go to Birmingham and see my family, which will be very nice. Also the haircut! The blessed haircut!

On a totally non-diabetes related point, can anyone tell me where to find a Samsung D900 (phone!) cheaply? I've tried ebay, cex, etc but I can't afford to really pay more than £40. Which is a lot to ask haha. But still..I want that phone! I used to have it a couple of years ago then gave it away, now my phone has disappeared and I want a D900 again.

Right, I'm off. I feel like all the energy I have is being leaked out my feet or something. Yay being ill!

(a little shout out to Andrew who commented on my last post. I'm glad my blog is useful for you; please keep reading!)

Last week I went to Prague with my mum, nan and sister. It was absolutely fantastic; the snow was still knee-high and powder soft. We kept trying to make snowballs but we couldn't!! The photo below is in Prague Zoo, it's a picnic bench...

Overall my control was okay over the week. I kept my levels under 10 for, I would guess, 95% of the time; I had one low and a couple of highs, but that's an average week, I guess.

Today I've been mainly on the low side; 4.1 waking, 5.4 before lunch, but then dropped to 2.7 post-lunch. I'd taken a nap after our first aid course today (which was pretty good, all things considered) and was having a really vivid dream about being low...then I woke up to 2.7. Ugh. I guess just a miscalculation of carbs.

I have an appointment with the DSN next week (I was snowed in last time!! I thought it was pretty good that they got my appointment rebooked within the month though). Also a hair cut on the same day yay! Now to find some photos to take along with me so I can show him what I want...I haven't been to the hair salon before, I'm only going because it takes the Salon Wish voucher I've had for nearly a year. Which means a £36 haircut is only going to cost me £11. Sweet! I'll be heading back up to Birmingham for the DSN and the haircut (nowhere in Gloucestershire seems to take that voucher!)

I also managed to blow £95 (of christmas money and money I took to Prague but didn't spend) yesterday. No wait...I have £30 left, so I blew £65. I got some clothes and some presents for my dad's birthday. I hope he likes them! I can't afford to post them to him, so I'm going to take them back to Birmingham with me next Thurs and leave them there for him (it's on Feb 5th).

Work/life in the community is a bit pear shaped at the moment. I felt as though I left the school playground years ago, and yet I've discovered someone I thought was a good friend (and even wrote 'please consider me a friend' on a card she wrote to me and David a month after we moved here) has actually been bitching me and David out to our manager. Not even bitching us out as a couple - but saying very personal, and incorrect, things about us ('Siobhan isn't mature enough to realise she cannot spend 24 hours a day with David.' wtf?!) so I'm trying to deal with that the best I can.

I am off to Tesco in a few mins. Oh the joys.

Saturday 9 January 2010

Today was great, except for the 23.2 and overcorrection. *rolls eyes*

Waking up at 6.6 and being 7.6 before lunch does make me feel as though I am getting control back though. I'm not going to start getting excited about this yet, but I am feeling more positive.

Wednesday 6 January 2010

I have not forgotten about this blog! I just don't have the time to update it as often as I would like.

But I am going to pledge in 2010 to update it weekly. Being as today is wednesday, I am going to pledge to update on Wednesdays.

So:

I had my swine flu/seasonal flu jab about 4 weeks ago. My sugars stayed above 10 and frequently hit the 20s. I felt awful. I upped my Lantus from 24 to 26 for 2 days to help (and it did help, but still only got it down to around the 10 mark).

Christmas wasn't too bad - again, sugars were reasonable with the odd spike. I kind of expected that though. Grazing is my worst habit - when there are are just THINGS (nuts, biscuits, chocolates, etc) around. Ugh. I learnt my lesson!

At the moment I am managing to keep my levels under 10 for most of the time. I find them floating just about 10 sometimes.

My ratios are currently 2:1 (2u/10g carbs) in the morning, 1.5:1 in the afternoon and 1:1 in the evening. But I find I am REALLY sensitive to insulin at night. Say if I test before bed and i'm...14.4 as an example. I would normally give 2u to bring this down. BUT, then I wake up in the 2's. So I'm scared, to be honest, to give even 2u when I'm in the teens!

I had an appt this morning with the DSN but I had to cancel it because of the snow :( it'll get rebooked but still. Ugh.
